Forklift Safety Suggestions & Guidelines
Every year, there are around 20,000 cases of accidents that are related to utilizing forklifts in the US alone. And every year around 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Fortunately, proper training regarding operation procedures and maintenance could considerably lessen the chance of accidents. The basic safety rules and tips below must be followed when utilizing a forklift.

Training
It is the job of the employer to make sure that the correct training program is provided to the staff and that operators of forklifts are qualified.. Training involves a combination of presentations, lectures, practical hands-on training and discussions. Reevaluation should occur every three years. Operators of forklifts must be up-to-date with current forklift safety rules. Forklift training program content covers dangers of forklift operations, general workplace hazards, workplace lighting and surfaces, and dangers related to utilizing the particular forklift that the worker would be using. An employee should be 18 years of age or over to use a forklift.

Maintenance
Forklift inspections must be done daily to be able to ensure the safe and proper functioning of the machine. The inspection involves keeping a checklist of items and reporting any problems immediately.

The Work Site
Having a safe and clean workplace is essential in the safe operation of a forklift. A safe work site means establishing "traffic lanes" which are just designated for forklift use. Warning systems such as horns and flashing lights must be in place to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations should be inspected daily and kept in good repair.

General Guidelines
Included in the general safety rules of using a forklift are ; respecting the load capacity of the forklift and never exceeding the maximum; ensuring there is enough clearance for the load; raising or lowering the load only while the forklift is stationary; and keeping legs, hands and arms inside the vehicle while utilizing it.
