A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine that is quite like a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These machines are mainly used in a warehouse setting. Most often they are utilized for transporting pallets and finishing certain tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which normally sits quite near the ground. The operator could direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be raised to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. For instance, if the required materials, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, several businesses may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts may be utilized to finish these specific jobs at some companies instead.
