Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures must be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to inspect battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Never allow things like for example matches or lighters to be used when an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
